Of the three systems we build, a pergola is the most open — no solid roof, no enclosed span — which is exactly why it's usually the easiest on paperwork. For the typical residential backyard in the Houston area, a freestanding pergola doesn't require a permit.

There are a couple of exceptions, and they're not common: an unusually large pergola, or one attached to your home and wired for ceiling fans, lighting, or heaters, can occasionally call for a sign-off. We check your specific plan against your neighborhood's rules before we start, and if anything is needed, we take care of it.

Formal engineering and permitting are really a commercial and restaurant matter, where structures answer to stricter codes. On those builds we manage the full engineering and permit process so the project stays on track.
